Houston Museum Of Natural Science - Cockrell Butterfly Center
Visitors walk through a living butterfly habitat with marvelous living examples of some of the world’s largest and coolest arthropods at the Cockrell Butterfly Center and Brown Hall of Entomology at the Houston Museum of Natural Science. The stunning, three-story glass structure is built around a 50-foot waterfall to create a simulated, tropical rain forest that is filled with exotic plants and hundreds of gorgeous, living butterflies. The beautiful, delicate creatures are imported from butterfly farms around the world to delight visitors as they flutter through the vegetation, stop to sip nectar or fruit juices and occasionally land on lucky visitors. Downstairs from the center is the “Insects and Us” section, where visitors can learn about what entomologists do for a living as well as beekeeping, butterfly gardening, mosquito control and how insects can be food. Before exiting, those with toddlers can stop at the “Land of Beeyond” to do a puzzle or two, read an insect-themed storybook or play in the giant beehive.
