Mary Gibbs and Jesse H. Jones Reflection Pool and Sam Houston statue
Measuring 740 feet long and 80 feet wide, the Mary Gibbs and Jesse H. Jones Reflection Pool is one of the most popular features in Hermann Park. Its sculpted stone edges create an attractive border for the pool while its black bottom offers maximum reflection for passersby. Both sides of the pool are lined with beautiful mature live oak trees. Located north of McGovern Lake, the picturesque Lake Overlook and Molly Ann Smith Plaza offer picnic areas on a raised lawn with shaded seating and playful interactive fountains for children to enjoy. Also in the plaza is the Pioneer Memorial obelisk, which honors the early pioneers who founded Houston, and a bronze statue of Texas icon Sam Houston on horseback, which was erected in 1916 as part of the “City Beautiful Project.” Houston’s outstretched arm points eastward toward the San Jacinto Battlefield where his outnumbered army defeated the forces of General Santa Ana and secured Texas’s independence from Mexico.
