HFD Fire Station No. 8
Established in 1838, the Houston Fire Department (HFD) originally consisted of one station, Protection Company No. 1. HFD grew into a volunteer fire department status with three stations by 1859, and began paying its firefighters in 1895. As the third largest fire department in the United States, HFD is a highly sophisticated public safety rescue system that saves hundreds of lives each year and reduces countless injuries and illnesses. Opened in 2008, Fire Station No. 8 replaced two fire stations that were demolished in the downtown area. It serves a crew of approximately 30 firefighters and includes eight apparatus bays. The building was designed to pay homage to the historic buildings that were demolished.
