Spider by Louise Bourgeois
Just above the Jones Reflection Pool, appearing to float on the water’s surface, a giant bronze arachnid sculpture by Louise Bourgeois descended on Hermann Park as part of Art in the Park, a yearlong series highlighting Hermann Park’s centennial by bringing contemporary artists and art installations to the park throughout 2014. Bourgeois is known for developing a rich body of work around the spider, from delicate works on paper to colossal installations although this was the only Spider by Bourgeois that was a water installation. From a family of weavers, Bourgeois employs the spider as a maternal figure: looming, protective and nurturing.
