McGovern Lake
The first public park ever built in Houston, Hermann Park was given to the city in 1914 by George Hermann. Enjoyed by both tourists and Houston residents, this park offers picnic areas, running trails, dog areas and more. One signature element is McGovern Lake, a scenic, eight-acre lake north of the main entrance to the Houston Zoo that provides a beautiful spot to relax and watch birds or take a pedal boat ride. The lake has three islands within its waters, with two islands set aside for migratory birds. Pedal boats are available for rental in Lake Plaza.
