The Waugh Bridge Bat Colony
In the crevices underneath the Waugh Drive Bridge near Buffalo Bayou live around 250,000 of Houston’s most secretive residents: bats. Known as “The Waugh Bridge Bat Colony,” this cluster consists of Mexican free-tailed bats that emerge nightly to stretch their wings and feed on area insects. Unlike other Texas bat colonies that choose warmer climates by migrating southward during the winter, The Waugh Bridge Bat Colony remains in Houston all year, making it a unique feature of Texas. In 2006, a bat observation deck was installed for visitors’ convenience when they gather at sunset to watch the amazing emergence of these nocturnal creatures.
