Hobby Center
Opened in 2002, the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts is located on the edge of the Houston Theater District. Featuring a façade of 60-foot-high glass walls that offer views of the city’s skyscrapers, Tranquility Park and Houston City Hall, the Hobby Center was named for William P. Hobby, Jr., a former Texas lieutenant governor and Houston businessman whose family donated funds for building the center. Designed by architects Robert A. M. Stern and Morris Architects, the Hobby Center replaced the Houston Music Hall and Sam Houston Coliseum. Built from limestone, brick, painted steel columns, glazed curtain wall and standing seam metal roof, the building is complemented by two art pieces, a mural in the Grand Lobby by American painter Sol LeWitt called Wall Drawing 2002 and In Minds, a two-part bronze sculpture by British-born Tony Cragg outside in Hines Plaza that mimics human profiles.
