Light Spikes
Originally installed in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center in Downtown Houston and now permanently at home outside the entrance of the George Bush Intercontinental, “Lights Spikes” consists of eight square columns around which are wrapped the colors of eight flags. Conceived by Jay Baker/Llewelyn-Davies Sahni, Inc., for the 1990 Economic Summit of Industrial Nations held in Houston, the abstract flags represent the European Economic Community and the seven countries that participated in that summit—the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Japan, Canada, Italy and Germany. Leaning at a 10-degree angle toward a central point representing Houston, each “spike” is supported by an aluminum grid structure and a 10-foot concrete pier below ground. The distance between the central point and each “spike” is relative to the distance between Houston and the capital of the country represented by the flags.
