Virtuoso - David Adickes
The first larger-than-life sculpture by David Adickes, Virtuoso was commission by the developer of the Lyric Centre in the early 1980s to pay home to music, dance and the performing arts since its location is by the Houston Theater District. The 36-foot-tall, 21-ton abstract sculpture depicts a giant cello being played by a largely invisible mustached and goateed player who sports only a head, hands and bow. Behind the cello sit a trio of abstract life-size orchestra members playing a violin, an upright bass and a flute whose bodies are reminiscent of stringed instruments while their hands are attached to seemingly invisible arms. Best of all, if one listens closely, a classical soundtrack plays in the background.
