Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum and Education Center
Opened to the public as a museum in 1997, the Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig Museum and Education Center represents and celebrates the Houston region’s place as the world’s petroleum capital. Operated by the Offshore Energy Center (OEC), the Ocean Star is a unique museum located in an actual offshore drilling rig permanently installed on Galveston’s Pier 19, just one block from The Strand. Built in Beaumont, Texas, in 1969 by Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation for the Ocean Drilling and Exploration Company fleet, the Ocean Star operated in the Gulf of Mexico across the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast and drilled approximately 200 wells during its active life.
