Rothko Chapel
Founded by Houston philanthropists John and Dominique de Menil, the Rothko Chapel was dedicated in 1971 as an intimate sanctuary available to people of every belief. Inspired by the mural canvases of Russian-born American painter Mark Rothko, the tranquil meditative environment of the chapel annually welcomes more than 80,000 visitors of every faith and nationality. Also in the plaza is Barnett Newman’s majestic sculpture, Broken Obelisk, which stands in memory of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
