Place of Remembrance
“Place of Remembrance” is a statue erected in 2000 in memory of the victims lost at sea during the 1900 Galveston hurricane. The work represents the suffering of the victims as well as the strength of the survivors who stayed to rebuild the city. Created by David Moore, the statue portrays a family battling the storm in the guise of a father holding one arm up to the gods and wrapping the other around his wife while she holds, comforts and protects their baby. While a hurricane flattened Galveston again in 2008, the statue survived.
