City Hall

Constructed in 1938–39, the Houston City Hall building is home to Houston’s city government. Surrounded by Downtown Houston’s skyscrapers and flanked by Tranquillity Park and the Houston Public Library, the simply designed structure features classic construction details. The lobby floor design depicts the protective role of government while the doors feature historical figures like Thomas Jefferson, Julius Caesar and Moses. A stone sculpture depicting two men taming a wild horse sits above the lobby entrance and symbolizes a community coming together to tame the world around them. A prime example of southwestern architecture of the late 1930s, Houston’s City Hall was originally built above a crowded fish market, so City Hall always has entertained a lively commercial market, and today the towering structure sits relatively small among downtown’s massive skyscrapers.
