Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart
Offering Downtown Houston a classic European cathedral with a modern twist, the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart, which forms the shape of a cross, provides a central place of worship for Catholics in the 10-county Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston. Its exterior Indiana limestone walls complement its more than 30,000 square feet of marble floors inside to set off its more than 100 pieces of stained glass, including Italian-crafted Clerestory windows, dramatic metal dome roof and 17-foot-high gold-leaf cross. The Co-Cathedral also boasts a 40-foot-high depiction of Christ, which overlooks the southern part of downtown, and white Carrara marble statues of Mary of the Immaculate Conception and the Sacred Heart of Jesus, each standing more than 12 feet tall and weighing more than 12,000 pounds.
