St. John Church at Sam Houston Park
Created as the city’s first park in 1900 when Mayor Sam Brashier purchased the Kellem-Noble land and house on the edge of town, the 19-acre Sam Houston Park has been the home of The Heritage Society since 1954. The park now features eight historic structures, including a log cabin and St. John Church which was moved from its original site on Mangum road to Sam Houston Park in 1968, it dates back as far as 1823. Surrounded by the modern skyscrapers, Sam Houston Park is a proud oasis of living history and wide-open greenness amid the city’s modern monuments to corporate and civic institutions.
