Sam Houston Monument
The most iconic piece of Houston civic art is the bronze equestrian statue of General Sam Houston designed by Enrico Cerrachio that sits in the traffic circle inside the entrance to Hermann Park. Atop his horse, Saracen, General Houston points toward the plains next to the San Jacinto River where he ultimately defeated the army of Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna and won independence for Texas. Unveiled in 1925, the colossal chased-surface statue sits on a granite arch, the interior of which is lines with bronze plaque and small ceramic tiles. The circular plaza that surrounds the arch is paved with multicolored, broken rubble marble tiles.
