Root Memorial Square Basketball Court
Sitting across from Toyota Center, the Root Memorial Square Basketball Court was donated to Houston in 1923 by descendants of Alexander Porter Root and his wife to perpetuate their memory. Completed in 2005, renovations to the square added new sidewalks, civic art, new irrigation, a basketball court, a shade pavilion, a fountain and improved lighting. At this memorial basketball court, exercise and sports buffs can enjoy a quick game of basketball under the towering downtown skyscrapers, and it’s a popular attraction with downtown business people, many of whom visit the surrounding park during lunch.
