North Freeway and Gulf Freeway

An oddity of an interstate highway located entirely within Texas, Interstate 45 (I-45) connects Dallas and Houston then continues southeast to Galveston across the Galveston Causeway to the Gulf of Mexico. Historically, I-45 replaced U.S. 75. The portion of I-45 between Downtown Houston and Galveston is known locally as the Gulf Freeway while the short, elevated section of I-45 that forms the southern boundary of Downtown Houston is known as the Pierce Elevated after the surface street that runs next to the freeway runs, and north of Interstate 10 it is known as the North Freeway.
