Sacred Heart Church
Built in 1904, Galveston’s Sacred Heart Church was declared a Texas Historic Landmark in 1981. Designed by noted Galveston architect Nicholas J. Clayton, the church was destroyed in the 1900 hurricane and reconstructed in 1903–04 with ornate octagonal towers, flying buttresses, elaborate ornamentation and a variety of arches that reflect influences of the Moorish, Byzantine, Gothic and Romanesque styles. Since the 1880s, many of Galveston’s prominent leaders have been associated with the parish, making Sacred Heart Church significant in the growth and development of the city. .
