Old YMCA building at 1600 Louisiana [Demolished]
When the original YMCA building on Fannin Street was outgrown by the 1930s, a site on the outskirts of downtown was acquired for a new 10-story structure. Built in the Italian Renaissance architectural style, the building features beautiful interior rock walls and painted-beam ceilings. Dedicated on September 8, 1941, the YMCA had a dormitory for 270 men, an assembly hall, 19 classrooms, two gyms, six handball courts, an indoor pool, youth department and workout areas. This structure served the downtown population for the next 70 years. With almost 125 years of history in Downtown Houston, the Downtown YMCA entered a new era in October 2010 with the opening of an incredible new facility. This new Tellepsen Downtown YMCA was named after the Tellepsen family, who has been involved with the YMCA since 1910 with four generations serving on the board.
