San Jacinto Monument

A 567.31-foot-high obelisk, the San Jacinto Monument is topped with a Lone Star—the iconic symbol of Texas. The towering column commemorates the site of the Battle of San Jacinto, the decisive battle of the Texas Revolution. Constructed between 1936 and 1939, the monument was dedicated on April 21, 1939, as part of the San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site and is the world’s tallest monumental column. Visitors can ride an elevator to the monument’s observation deck for an aerial view of Houston and the Battleship Texas. Located inside the base of the monument, the San Jacinto Museum of History focuses on the history of the Battle of San Jacinto and Texas culture and heritage in general. The entire San Jacinto Battlefield was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was designated a Historic Civil Engineering Landmark in 1992.
